The year 2018 presents a significant turning point for me in terms of how I create. I am finally able to tap into a truer, more genuine version of myself. This realization is being reflected in my latest creations.
For decades I have doubted my creative abilities, mainly because I am self-taught and without formal training. I have since come to realize that fact need not matter and should never stop me from expressing myself creatively and following my bliss. The times I am in creative mode are the only times I find myself able to let go of the concept of time, accept what is, and truly feel that which moves me.
I’ve noticed the creative process getting easier; more enjoyable. I wake up and I can’t wait to get to my easel, rain or shine. The creative block has finally dissipated.
ABOUT ON MY EASEL – NEW CONSCIOUSNESS ARTIST JOAN A BROWN
I wanted to start the year off working on a much larger canvas than I usually paint on. It’s suppose to be symbolic of my wanting to “go BIG or go home” for this year. My goal is to aim BIGGER! My intent with this one is to practice working with values. Value in my paintings has always been a challenge for me, therefore I’ve decided to make it my mission this year to begin placing more emphasis and attention on the value in my work including my drawings and the paintings I do in acrylics; in an effort to develop my skills and produce better, more realistic artwork.
On my Easel – New Consciousness Artist Joan A Brown, so titled, because it represents the mindset I have now. The reference material is taken from a photo I saw taken by oscarlinares240 .
I love the calm I experience when I look at this image. I am enjoying capturing that essence in this painting. It also makes a great subject for practicing values. I am working with a very limited palette. One that consist of the 3 primary colors plus white. That is my signature palette, and makes the process a lot simpler for me.
I use white along with blue and red to produce my own value scale. Then I use that value scale to produce a middle value painting.
The image you see here: On my Easel – New Consciousness by Artist Joan A Brown, is after I’ve completed the preliminary sketch on the canvas followed by blocking in the basic subjects. There’s much more work to do so I best get at it. I will post pictures here of the final painting for those of you interested in seeing it (or purchasing it).
