Reconnecting With My Work

Going through my possessions recently I came across two of what I consider my best works of art created exactly 10 years ago. Both paintings were stored in mailing tubes tucked away in black garbage bags I had not opened since relocating from Alberta several years ago.

A New and Different Mindset

“Looking at them has given me new motivation…”

I discovered an 8″  x 10″ first and then to my pleasant surprise this beautiful 14 x 18 inch oil painting painted on unstretched canvas in 2007. Looking at each piece I could not believe I painted them. I was in my element back then. Since I moved away I have not been the same in the way that I paint…something died. I can’t quite place my finger on it.

Be-that-as-it-may, they are signed with my signature so they are definitely my work. Looking at them has given me new motivation to try and regain whatever supposedly ‘died’, but with a new and different mindset.

These paintings are in need of a title and stretching. The image you see above is a poor representation of the larger painting taken with my hand-held camera. I plan to do a proper scans of both paintings and then repost them here among my other original paintings.

Let me know what you think would be a good title (name) for this piece. All suggestions are welcomed.

Painting Canadian Snowbirds

The smell of home sweet home! Painting Canadian Snowbirds in flight always intrigue me. As a matter of fact, I find any plane in flight interesting. Growing up in Alberta, it was a family tradition to attend the annual air show at Namao military base near my home. Nothing thrilled me more. Nothing much has changed in my adult years. I still love planes and I still enjoy painting the Canadian Snowbirds.

As per usual, I painted Canadian Snowbirds Oil Painting by Artist Joan A Brown using GUMBACHER oils on an 8 in x 10 in stretched canvas

Midnight Storm Oil Painting by Artist Joan A Brown

Midnight Storm is an original oil painting on a 6 x 8 inch canvas sheet. I painted this one in 2005 as a display ad for the oil painting courses I teach. The clouds in the darkened sky were moving rather quickly as the waters beat against the nearby rocks.

This little seascape reminds me of a place I once visited years ago on the west coast of Canada. I painted Midnight Storm Oil Painting by Artist Joan A Brown using professional GRUMBACHER oils.

I had no idea where I was going with “Tranquil Marshes” when I started it, but I’m sure happy with where I ended up. The foggy distant foliage, calm waters,as well as the underlying deadwood on the foreground really served to set the mood for this piece.

I’m sure there’s a place similar to Tranquil Marshes Oil Painting by Artist Joan A Brown somewhere out there on God’s lovely green earth.

Italian Door Oil Painting by Artist Joan A Brown

I was inspired to paint ITALIAN DOOR back in 2008 after having lived in Italy and fell in love with its history and art. I saw many of these doors during my visit to this beautiful country and was motivated to use much of its historic surrounding as subjects in my paintings. The original photograph of Italian Door Oil Painting by Artist Joan A Brown was captured by photographer “Terry” (the only name I have of her), herself a lover of all things Italian. This original work of art (not a print), was created using

ITALIAN DOOR was painted on an 18 in x 24 in stretched canvas using professional Winsor & Newton oils.
